Town of Liberty Reminding Residents of New Requirements for the Enhanced STAR Exemption

The Town of Liberty is reminding all Liberty property owners, 65-years-old and older of new requirements for the 2019 Enhanced STAR exemption.

The new requirement for those applying or reapplying, include enrollment in the Income Verification Program (IVP). Residents that are enrolled in the IVP currently do not need to re-enroll in the program to receive the Enhanced STAR Exemption check. The Liberty Assessor’s Office will verify eligibility for new IVP enrollees based on the income information provided by the homeowner. Following the first year, the New York State Tax Department will automatically verify eligibility and homeowners will no longer need to renew the exemption or share income tax returns with the Assessor’s Office.

Failure to comply with the new requirement will result in loss of your Enhanced STAR Exemption.

Please note this change only applies to Liberty seniors 65 years of age or older applying for the Enhanced STAR Exemption or for those who have the exemption included in their property tax bills. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2019.

To renew applications for the Enhanced STAR exemption and to enroll in the IVP, please visit the following link for more information and required forms: https://tax.ny.gov/star/.
