Soapbox Derby and Grand Opening of Skate Park Among Memorial Weekend Activities

The annual Memorial Day Parade through the business district will honor war heroes.

LIBERTY, N.Y. (May 24, 2016) – The grand opening and ribbon cutting of the long awaited Liberty Skate Park will take place Saturday, May 28 from noon to 3:00 p.m. The skate park is located at the intersection of Grant Street and Darbee Lane in Liberty, NY.

Area residents are encouraged to bring their decks and skate the new park made possible by Team Skate Liberty, NY, Town of Liberty, Village of Liberty, Liberty CDC, Sullivan County, New York State, Tony Hawk Foundation, the Gerry Foundation, and countless other donors. The ribbon cutting is sponsored by the Greater Liberty Chamber of Commerce, Town of Liberty, Village of Liberty, Liberty CDC, Sullivan County and Team Skate.

“This project is an example of our abilities when our community works together,” said Liberty Town Councilman Brian McPhillips. “The opening of the skate park is so important for the brand that we are trying to push in Liberty. I stand behind the belief that Liberty is a great place to live and raise a family. Congratulations to Team Skate!”

Sullivan County’s 5th Annual Soap Box Derby will take place Sunday, May 29 on North Main Street in Liberty, NY. The races will begin at 8:00 am and continue throughout the day.

“Liberty children and their parents prepare for months to take part in the much anticipated soapbox derby each year,” said Town of Liberty Parks and Recreation Director Brian Scardefield. “This is always one of the most exciting events of the year!”

The Liberty Chamber of Commerce will be holding its 13th Annual Yard Sale-O-Rama on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29. The Yard Sale-O-Rama features over 12 locations throughout Liberty. Residents from surrounding towns flock to Liberty to find deals and treasures at this highly attended event.

Liberty Yard Sale-O-Rama locations include: Town Hall, Village Hall, Hillside Greenhouse, Liberty Fitness Center, Sears, Catskill Hudson Bank, Animal Hospital in Ferndale, Running W Pit Stop, Liberty Diner, Antique Palace Emporium, Barbanti Realty, Swan Lake Country Store and other participating locations and convenience stores throughout town.

Capping off the weekend of events will be the Annual Liberty Memorial Day Parade planned for Monday, May 30. The parade will start at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of West Liberty and North Main Streets and travel south on Main Street through the business district. Marchers will turn down Church Street and end at the Liberty Veterans Cemetery on Cold Spring Road. Many of Liberty’s veterans, service personnel, elected officials and service organizations will be marching. A short service to honor war heroes will take place at the cemetery.

“We encourage everyone to come out and honor those who have made the greatest sacrifice for our freedom,’ said Liberty Town Supervisor Charlie Barbuti. “Our annual parade is also a perfect way to show our support for those currently serving in the armed forces and other service personnel.”
