Town of Liberty Announces Hanofee Summer Day Camp, Pool to Remain Closed for Summer Season

LIBERTY, N.Y. (June 9, 2020) – The Town of Liberty today announced that the Hanofee Summer Day Camp and pool will remain closed.  The camp and community pool located at Francis A. Hanofee Memorial Park has offered Town of Liberty residents and their families a fun-filled camp experience and Olympic-sized swimming and kiddie pool to cool off on hot summer days. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic and required safety measures, the Town Board’s recent action was to not open the facilities for the upcoming summer season.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we announce that we will not be opening up our Summer Day Camp and pool for the 2020 summer season. The decision to close both came during a special Town Board meeting last week,” said James Adam Guara, Assistant Recreation Director, Town of Liberty Parks & Recreation.

Hanofee Summer Day Camp, which typically runs from early July through mid-August, welcomes approximately 170 children each year. It has offered the area’s youngest residents an opportunity to have fun while staying active during the summer months.

“The action of the Board resulted in a split vote with Brian McPhillips and Vince McPhillips voting in favor of keeping the day camp open and Dean Farrand and I voting against opening the Hanofee Day Camp and pool this season,” said Town Supervisor Frank DeMayo. “This was a very difficult decision to reach as all the Board members were unified in not wanting to close camp, but there were differences in opinions regarding the logistics of opening camp due to the current requirements and recommendations by multiple agencies and professionals.”

“We, at the Department of Parks and Recreation, are still driving forward and will be offering recreational programs for our youth and community once statewide restrictions are lifted and we can do so in a safe and responsible manner,” added Guara.

In addition to the pool, Hanofee Park features a 24-acre fishing lake, covered pavilions, a state-of-the-art playground, picnic areas, hiking trails, basketball and tennis courts, a baseball field, and a sand volleyball court.
