Local officials step up backing for residents of condemned apartment complex.

LIBERTY, N.Y. (May 25, 2018) – As a result of ongoing complaints and unsuccessful negotiations to rectify issues with Red Barn Apartments located in Liberty, NY, the Town of Liberty Building Department officially condemned the entire facility on May 21, 2018. As a result, the Sherriff’s office, Department of Social Services and the Town of Liberty all mobilized quickly to ensure a smooth transition for residents of the apartment complex.

Within hours of the Supervisor’s office being notified by the Building Department of the unsafe and dangerous conditions at Red Barn Apartments, the appropriate County Officials were alerted and a dignified response was put into action to assist the residents of the apartment complex. Assistance included transportation to the Department of Social Services office, opportunities and resources to apply for emergency assistance and temporary housing. Furthermore, Town of Liberty Dog Control Official Joanne Gerow was also at the scene to address animal concerns. All groups involved stepped up services to make this process safe and calm.

“The Town of Liberty appreciates the support of our county partners in responding to these situations,” said Liberty Town Supervisor Brian Rourke. “We remain focused on ensuring the health and safety of our residents. When there are situations of unsafe and uninhabitable apartment buildings and when quality of life is affected, it is our continued goal to not only provide a quick and appropriate response, but also help to coordinate the available support and resources to our residents.”

The Town of Liberty Building Department has posted Red Barn Apartments property as condemned until all violations are corrected and are satisfactorily inspected by the Town of Liberty Building Department as well as Sullivan County Electrical Inspector.
