Town of Liberty Invites Public to Help Build New ADA Interpretive Trail

Friends of Walnut hosts first Walnut Trail Day on May 6.

LIBERTY, N.Y. (April 26, 2017) – The Town of Liberty and the Friends of Walnut welcome the public to help build a new Interpretive Trail at Walnut Mountain Town Park. The volunteer project has been coined “Walnut Trail Day” with the first one kicking off on May 6th from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the West Lake Street Parking Lot at the Walnut Mountain Town Park.

Those interested in volunteering with the installation of the new trail can contact the Parks and Recreation Office at (845) 292-7690. For those interested in helping on weekdays, please contact Glenn Horton at friendsofwalnut@gmail.com. All ages are welcomed to help volunteer and hand tools such as shovels, rakes and tree trimmers are welcomed as well. The “Walnut Trail Day” will be available on additional days within the next few months.

“We want to continue to bring the community together and with the Walnut Trail Day we hope to do just that,” said Town of Liberty Parks and Recreation Assistant Recreation Director James Guara. “We appreciate all of the help our residents are able to provide and are thankful for the Friends of Walnut’s support in creating this trail.”

The trail will be built under the guidelines of the 1990 American Disabilities Act and offers educational stops along the way. The new trail will be installed at the Lake Street entrance of Walnut Mountain Park and will have interpretive signage throughout the trail, which will point out different species of trees, plants, and animal habitats that are native to Sullivan County.
