Town of Liberty to Welcome New ADA Interpretive Trail

Grant money from Sullivan County Plans & Progress Small Grants Program will enhance Walnut Mountain Park.

LIBERTY, N.Y. (March 7, 2017) – The Town of Liberty has been awarded a $7,000 grant from the Sullivan County Plans & Progress Small Grants Program to install an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant Interpretive Trail. The grant was spawned by the Friends of Walnut, a local group of supporters for Walnut Mountain Park.

The new ADA Interpretive Trail will be installed at the Lake Street entrance of Walnut Mountain Park. The trail will be built in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and will have interpretive signage throughout the trail, which will point out different species of trees, plants, and animal habitats that are native to Sullivan County.

“The Friends of Walnut group does a lot of trail work in the area and we are thankful for their support, and help in making the development of a trail that affords easier access for people with disabilities,” said Town of Liberty Parks and Recreation Director Brian Scardefield. “The new trail at Walnut Mountain Park will only help to enhance the natural resources and recreational opportunities for our residents.”

The new trail is expected to begin construction on March 15, 2017 and is anticipated to be completed by October 1, 2017.  Residents interested in helping with the installation of the new trail can contact the Parks and Recreation Office at (845) 292-7690.
